FAQ’s ABOUT BECOMING A THERAPEUTIC FOSTER PARENT



Q. How long will the licensing process take?
A. The total application process will generally take between 3-6 months. This depends on each individual family, as application materials must be submitted, references returned, and all hours of pre-service training completed to Apple Grove submitting your application to the State of Nevada. Please note that after your application is submitted to the State, it could take several weeks before your application is processed. This is completely normal, and we thank you for your patience during the licensing process.


Q. Will I receive compensation for my work as an Apple Grove foster parent?

A. Yes, we issue a competitive reimbursement. Contact our recruiter for more details.


Q. Will I be able to decide which child is placed in my home?

A. Yes, definitely. No child would be placed in your home without your full agreement. You will be provided with all information about the child to assist you in making this decision. You will also have the opportunity to meet the child before you make your decision for a placement in your home.


Q. Do I have to be married?

A. No you do not have to be married. We welcome single parents.


Q. If I were to be an Apple Grove foster care parent, what kind of support will be available to assist me in my work as a foster parent?

A. an Apple Grove case worker is available to provide support and assistance to you. Apple Grove also provides monthly support groups which all foster parents are expected to attend. These groups provide support, guidance, and information on ways to deal with children placed in your homes.


Q. Do I have to live in my own house?

A. No, an apartment is acceptable.


Q. How many bedrooms do I need?

A. Every child should have their own bed. Furthermore every bedroom should be considered either male or female rooms so that sexes are not mixed within a single bedroom.


Q. Do I have to have children of my own to qualify for a foster parent?

A. No, but you need to have prior experience with children, and must be 21 years of age, licensed, trained, and in good health.


Q. Do I need my own car?

A. Yes, you need a car and every child must have his or her own seat. Child safety seats must be provided depending on age. You will be responsible for transporting children to a variety of appointments. You are also required to have a car fire extinguisher and first aid kit in all vehicles transporting foster children. 


Q. What age range are these children?

A. The children range in age from 0-18 years of age. You will have the option to choose which children you will accept in your home.


Q. Does fostering lead to adoption?

A. The majority of children in foster care across the country are not eligible for adoption. Before foster children can be made available for adoption, their parents’ rights must be terminated. Foster parents are not required to adopt the foster children in their care. But, If a child has been in a foster home and does become eligible for adoption, the foster parents may get first preference in the adoption.


Q. How do children enter the foster care system?
A. They have been removed from the custody of their parents generally due to neglect, abuse, or abandonment. Some have been in foster care for many years while their parents try to resolve problems others are entering the system for the first time. A result of their troubled backgrounds, many of our foster children have difficulties in school. Some suffer from depression and have trouble making friends. Others may have trouble controlling their anger and their emotions, following rules or respecting authority figures.


Q. Will an arrest disqualify me from being eligible?

A. It may disqualify you depending on the circumstances, but it is handled on a case by case basis. Any other members of your household will also be subject to a criminal background check.


Q. Does one person in the home have to be stay-at-home parent?

A. No, but the child/children must be supervised at all times by an adult 21 years older.


Q. Who can supervise the children other than us?

A. A person who is 21 years or older and is authorized by the state. This person is classified as your non-primary.
